There are some bands who kick around for ages before they are recognised for their genius, then there are some who get a record deal as soon as they form. I am sorry to say that this band, Kiuas, belong to the former..and i have no idea why it took so long for them to break through with an album! This Finnish mob formed sometime in 1998 and are signed to the popular Spinefarm Records. Naturally I was a bit sceptic when i first found out that the word Kiuas actually means Bathhouse Stove in Finnish, but, every band deserves a chance in my world, so with no objection i stuck them on. Well, i must say i am glad i did! The first track, title track in fact, wates no time in getting started as it slams into a thunderous start with fast blastbeats courtesy of excellent drummer Markku Nreneva, who shines throughout the album with remarkably in-synch, fast-praced drumming. The sound the band approach is melodic, yet so brutal at the same time. Imagine Children of Bodom with Soilwork touches and Stratovarius-esque keyboards and you're just about there. The only let down for some may be the fact that vocalist Ilja Jalkanen actually "sings" and doesn't growl or shriek! For those who think this may not go hand-in-hand with Melodic Death Metal need to hear this band as it really does to an almost immaculate standard! Second track "On Wings of Death We Ride" picks up where the first track left off, sounding almost exactly like Children of Bodom on their best days complete with guitar duels and harmonies. "No Sleep For Me" slows down the pace (just barely though!) to a stomping triplet beat that will get your head going in seconds! This song shows how wide the band draws their influences with a hint Manowar present! "Until We Reach The Shore", "Across The Snows" and "Thorns of A Black Rose" continue much the same theme as the others but with enough diversity it does not seem one-sided. At one point even a Viking-metal effect is introduced to make the listening experience even more enjoyable. The last track on this short, but enjoyable album "And The North Star Cried" may possibly be the best combining all features present on the other songs into one. The production is not weak, neither is it polished. The rhythm guitars can seem almost fuzzy at times if you're playing it loud, though this did not seem to bother me much. However, the drum sound is excellent!

If you like heavy-metal in general at all put this one on your shopping list and you will not be disappointed. Bands come out of nowhere and surprise me at how good they are a lot, but nothing prepared me for how impressive this is.

Short, but sweet. Progressive, powerful and un-predictable.
