Now this is one outstanding band. I was first introduced to these Finnish vunderkids via their excellent ep for the now sadly defunct UK label Rage of Achilles, entitled Winter in June. Said ep contained 4 songs which were filled to the brim with melody, aggression, and passion. I stoicly prepared myself for a full length follow up which would undoubtedly knock my socks off, and with The Spirit of Ukko I have been totally and utterly fulfilled. Kiuas combines aspects from a variety of genres, yet managed to sound inimitably original. The songs here on The Spirit of Ukko possess the energy and melody of Power Metal, the aggression of Death/Thrash, and an epic atmosphere found only within the most powerful of Pagan metals. Vocalist Ilja Jalkanen leads the charge on this record, displaying a passionate, gruff vocal style which comes off as both charismatic and menacing. While the man held is own on the Winter in June ep, he truly has come into his own here, sounding eons more confident and powerful. From croons to screams, shouts and sing-alongs, the man truly OWNS this songs. Jalkanen isnt ON his own, however, as guitarist Mikko Salavaara is a bright young prodigy in his own right. Riffs fly fast and furious here on The Spirit of Ukko, as do electrifying solos of the highest order. Original and inventive, Salavaara possesses a unique style which combines a marked 80s rock influence with the Finnish metal stylings which have become the countrys trademark. Not forgetting the rhythm section, Teemu Tuominens bass playing holds down the load end, while the monster behind the kit known as Markku Nareneva pushes each songs forward to the brink of no return, with an infectious energy and atypical rhythmic approach. Finally, Atte Tanskanen provides keyboards which add their own mark upon each of the lps 8 cuts. Indeed, The Spirit of Ukko flies by at lightspeed, each song more enjoyable than the next, before culminating in the all out epic closing piece, And the North Star Cried.and when said songs final, echoing strains are left ringing in your head, Im positive youll be as desperate as I was to push play again and again and again For Kiuas is a band destined to make some waves. Their talent simply cannot be denied. Do yourself a favor and check these guys out: you wont be disappointed. By far one of the most impressive releases Ive heard so far this year. The Spirit of Ukko is an absolute must.
