Winter in June is the very first offering from the Finnish band lead by Mikko Salovaara. Made of only four songs that all follow more or less the same direction and pattern, this album didnt exactly knock me out by its originality.
Kiuas dont try to impress by their complexity or avant-gardiste viewpoint but instead are coming down with solid heavy metal that should get your heart and head banging to its rhythms. This is good driving music! The pulse is usually in the mid-fast to fast range which at the end gives it a certain power metal edge. The vocals are from rough clean to melodic in the chorus lines. Band leader Mikko throws in a convincing grim voice once in a while to my pleasure. Keyboards uses are always a plus for me even if discrete most of the time and on a couple tracks they constitute a nice introduction to the song. You can count on chunky guitar riffs and very good solos on each and every composition. The closing track Across the Snows is adding these elements into the structure: wind samplings, acoustic guitars and a certain folkloric / Viking twist making it one of the best moments on this disc.
Interesting kicker from those new comers.
