Another Finnish band, Kiuas. Dont be fooled by the Kiuss-like name but this album, Reformation, is apparently their second release. They were formed back in 2000. It is hard to classify the style of this band. If you listen to the music, it sounds like Children Of Bodom (the keyboards) went power metal with the quasi-epic hooks of Sonata Arctica, what with the guitar riffs and the keyboards (there are even some folky overtones). The guitars, crunchy death riffing, reminds me of Zakk Wylde at times. Throw some In Flames melodicness in there and you still cant categorise them. They use a lot of influences from various extreme genres and that shows in their techical riffing and many tempo changes. The latter makes it hard for the band to grab my attention, but, we soldier on, ADD despite. A good thing is that they create their own sound that is hard to pidgeonhole and thus fans of technical, versatile metal should be pleased, no? The production is really phat and the typical Spinefarm-band agression is there good thing? The musicianship is very competent but the vocals is love it or hate it. Standout songs are the laughable titled Race with the Falcons and The New Chapter because of its more traditional structuress and very cool riffs. Black Winged Goddess is also a standout due to the use of death vocals, which IMHO suits the music better than the vocalists (Ilja Jalkanen) cleaner attempts. Bleeding Strings have these cute little licks that accentuate the riffs. The final and title track brings some epic Avantasia into the mix with the keyboards and soaring sing-a-long melodies. The songwriting is pretty mediocre, and this seems very JAFB (just another finnish band) but the playing talent of the musos, especially the guitarist, is unmistakable. I reckon, try it out if you like your metal technical but lag af if you need consistency. Use it, dont use it. Lets just leave it at a very original power metal band with a cool album cover. In summary I dunno.
